On the southern downslopes of the Bukk mountains in a semi-circle around the strange shaped post-volcanic Nagy-Eged mountain, lies the Eger wine region. This is the home of many excellent red and white wines with the best known legendary Egri Bikaver (Bull's blood of Eger) and Egri Leanyka (Eger Maiden) among them. The wine growing tradition of the region goes back to the Roman times and ancient documents prove that the Eger wines were popular with the kings of the Arpad dynasty. Eger, the center of the region with its unique 140 km long cellar system, excavated in the middle ages, provides favorable conditions, such as a constant temperature and humidity for storing and maturing wine. The thick, special mildew which grows on the cellar walls and the long row of wooden barrels is an unusual sight for the visitors.

The long rows of Eger wine cellars: Kiskoporos, Nagykoporos, Kolyuk, Veroszala and the world famous legendary "Szepasszonyvolgy" (valley of fair women) are a popular tourist destination, but you can find numerous cellars with good quality wines in the neighboring villages of the region: Andornaktalya, Egerszalok, Feldebro, Noszvaj, Ostoros, Verpelet.

To understand the uniqueness of Eger wines one should understand the combined influence of excellent soil, a favourable climate, the special sorts of vine; the beneficial influence of cellars, the expertise, care and hard work of local wine-growers.
