The Wine of Heves County 2004

Heves county is the home of two historic wine regions: Matraalja wine region around the town of Gyongyos and Eger wine region with the town Eger in the center. Both Eger and Gyongyos are awarded the rank "city of grape and wine".

Enjoy our wines at the same time as sampling the specialties of our world famous Hungarian cuisine. Explore the intimate restaurants of Heves county and try such specialties of Eger, as meat soup, pancake; traditional food of the palotz region, game dishes of Matra, the fiery fish soup from the river Tisza and delicious trout in Szilvasvarad.

A wide range of wine festivals and celebrations provide good opportunities for tasting our wines. The most outstanding of them are: "Bull's blood festival on Saint Donat's day" in Eger, or the vintage festival with spectacular processions, folk dances, craft fairs, wine competitions and gastronomical delights in the wine growing towns and villages. Visitors may participate in wine picking, pressing, making must and may also bottle wine themselves. Special "cellar programs" are offered for tourist groups and business associates.
